Big news for the holidays!

I have many exciting things to share with everyone. So many, in fact, that I spent far too much time trying to figure out what to share first.

So I'll start by mentioning that the Zarder series has brand-new covers just in time for the holiday season! I've been busy showing them off to anyone I can, as I'm quite pleased with how they turned out.

For those of you who will be in the Marietta, GA area on December 8, I will be signing books at the  210 Cobb Parkway Walmart from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Part of the proceeds will be going to help needy families during the holiday season, so be sure to stop by and see me if you can! For those of you with e-readers, I will be e-mailing Smashwords coupons for eBooks to everyone who donates and leaves their e-mail with me.

I'm still working on "Sirens Have a Bad Rap", though it may be having a title change soon to better reflect the crew of paranormal characters within it.

In the meantime, I have written a piece of flash fiction for Winter Escapes, a promotion that I and other YA authors have put together for the holiday season. Winter Escapes can be found at yafantasybooks.com , and will last from December 7-14th. We will be giving away multiple prizes over the course of the event, so be sure to visit and see what I and the other authors have written for you!

My flash fiction piece is scheduled to post on December 12, and is set at some point between The Zarder and The Speed of Wind, when Rulsaesan's daughter Amsaena discovered snow and romance.

I wish you all a happy holiday season!

National Novel Writing Month Approaches - Will You Participate?

November is National Novel Writing Month, a month-long project designed to get people to write a 50,000 word novel in a month. Some good friends used it as a excuse to make me work harder on my writing projects, such as the Zarder series. If you've even thought about writing a book, go to nanowrimo.org to sign up. If you reach the 50,000 word goal, you get bragging rights among your non-writing friends. As further proof that you made it, CreateSpace is giving 5 free paperback copies of a finished book to NaNoWriMo winners (though I must advise you to not try to publish the book as soon as December 1st hits; you won't believe how many embarassing typos and plot holes my editor found when she was going through my projects)!

Since "Sea Foam" is still in the research phase, I've decided to dedicate this National Novel Writing Month to a team of paranormal women trying to solve a murder in a small Ohio town. Here is the working cover:

I hope some of you participate in National Novel Writing Month! It is a rewarding and fun experience.

"The Blood of Senbralni" is here!

I am now, officially, the author of a trilogy. This seems like a fantasy author rite of passage, so I am quite pleased with this achievement. Now, I simply have to keep writing...

Keep an eye out on Goodreads; I plan on giving away one copy of each book over the next two weeks. For those of you attending Dragon*Con, keep an eye out for the woman in the Child of Earth costume. I'd love to meet you there!

"The Blood of Senbralni" is available on amazon.com, with more outlets coming soon.

Random Tidbits From the Bloodline of Senbralni

As a world-builder, I find myself with a gigantic folder filled with information that just won't fit into one of my novels. For instance, there is absolutely no reason for a reader to know the name of every single Leyrkan and Leyrque the Sandleyr has ever seen. There isn't even a reason to know the names of all the Sir Not Appearing In This Films of the Sandleyr. I can tell you exactly where the villages are that the Fire Queen and other Onizards have completely missed. This is useless, however, unless I write another story involving one of those villages (they're fishermen, so sailing across the sea and getting freaked out by the Sandleyr isn't out of the question).

Since the next book is titled "The Blood of Senbralni", I felt like bringing out one of those tidbits from my folder of random information: the bloodline of Senbralni.

Senbralni is a character who has only appeared in the prologues, but he is a legend among the Onizards for bringing love, light, and the Sandleyr to the world. He is also the ancestor of almost every ruler of the Night Kingdom. There has been so much time since Senbralni's reign that rumors and legends about this bloodline are as common as rumors and legends about Senbralni himself.

So what is truth, and what is legend? Well, it's more fun to leave some things a mystery, but I do have a list of the Leyrkans and Leyrques of the Night Kingdom, a list that I save for future stories. Here are a few stories from that list:

Maraeni (f)
Maraeni was Senbralni’s youngest daughter, and it is said she had the strongest heart of all of his children. Since she had become a joinmate shortly before her father died, she chose to be the Lady of the Night Kingdom instead of the Leyrque. Her devotion to her love meant that, while she was not particularly memorable as a Child of Light, she was the ancestor of all future descendants of Senbralni.

Delraeni Fire-tamer(f), great-great-great-granddaughter of Senbralni
Delraeni was jokingly called Fire-tamer after winning the heart of the Rantrefi, the son of the Day Kingdom’s Leyrkan. Rantrefi had been sent to the Night Kingdom as an ambassador after a scandalous rumor involving an unclaimed egg. Delraeni proved Rantrefi’s innocence, but when he had a choice to return to the Day Kingdom, he confessed the Night had a better view. Ever since, the occasional descendant of Senbralni has sought a mate from the children of the Day Kingdom's rulers.

Bralkanni the Pure (m), great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson of Senbralni
Bralkanni had a fear throughout his lifetime that the people of the Night Kingdom would end up worshiping the Bloodline of Senbralni more than the Great Lord of the Sky. This fear kept him from acting on his feelings for the woman that he loved. He was adamant that his people pay proper respect to the Great Lord of the Sky, even to the point of ignoring his proper title. It is said that when he sensed the love his niece, Ranmani, was trying to hide from the Onizard man she loved, he repented from his views on the Bloodline's celibacy and insisted on performing the joinmating ceremony. He was much loved in his later years, and he never wavered from his love for the Great Lord of the Sky (I have to wonder what he'd think of the events described in The Zarder and The Speed of Wind).

There are many more examples, but I don't want to post them and spoil the story for you. Besides, even though there is a lot of world-building going on in the background, I may not know all of the story yet. There is a very early, very terrible draft of The Zarder in which Lady Delsenni is Lord Delsenni, Leyrkan Mekanni's dear and platonic friend. Enjoy these tidbits while I write the rest!

Project Update: The Blood of Senbralni

The cover is ready for The Blood of Senbralni. There are a few more things to do as far as editing is concerned, but I'm pleased to announce that it will be released August 26, 2012. For those of you keeping track, that is exactly one year after the release of The Zarder. It is also over a week after the Hunger Games DVD is released, so you have plenty of time to get your Katniss fix before moving on to the third chapter in the story of the Onizards.

I hope you enjoy this journey with my characters as much as I did.

I'm FREE! I'm FREE!

The giveaway for "The Speed of Wind" on Goodreads had over 300 entries. This is an impressive amount of interested people. Rather than disappoint them all, I have made the Kindle version of "The Speed of Wind" free today (June 7) and tomorrow (June 8).

Check it out here!

Thank you all for participating, and welcome to the Sandleyr!

Busy, busy...

Life as a writer certainly never has a dull moment. I'm working on a few projects right now; one of them is in the final editing stage, one of them is in the first draft stage, and the other is in the daydream stage.

First, let me tell you a little about the project in the final editing stage. The third Onizard novel, "The Blood of Senbralni" will be out in late August/early September (date TBA). Within this novel, the potential conflict hinted at the end of "The Speed of Wind" will come to pass. I'm still working on the blurb, as the story is still changing in this round of edits (one character is insisting on a larger role, and helpfully pointed out a plot hole he could fix). Here is what I can tell you:

When tragedy strikes the Night Kingdom, the youngest Zarder, Delma, and her Bond Amblomna are considered the only ones capable of stopping the Fire Queen for good. After all, Amblomna has a strange gift: she can speak to the rain, and the rain listens. Unfortunately, the spirit in the rain has no intention of helping Amblomna find the Fire Queen, and he does not intend to reveal the real reason why Amblomna was chosen.

Meanwhile, Senrae has once again been forced to stay behind and leave the heroics to other Onizards. While this troubles him, not knowing the identity of his enemies within the Sandleyr is far more troubling. A shy Child of Fire named Delgrafi seems to have more knowledge of the tragedy than she should, yet she acts as if she is trying to protect him from something. Only one thing is certain; he must discover Delgrafi's secrets if he has any hope of protecting his friends and family.

The Blood of Senbralni binds them all together...but will it be their undoing?

"The Zarder" was the novel that took the longest to write, but "The Blood of Senbralni" was the toughest for me to write. I am hoping that the effort I have been putting into this novel shows, as it will be the last Onizard novel for a while.

I am not saying goodbye to the Sandleyr for good, though. The first draft project is a collection of short stories with some of the characters who got stuck in the background, but who still have a story to be told. I suspect Lady Senmani is going to have the longest story; it may end up being novella length by the time I'm done with it. Isenna, a.k.a. Ransenna's mom, has a decision on how much she can do to stand up for justice. Since I'm still writing the roughest of drafts, I can't tell you much more than that.

The daydreaming stage of "Sea Foam" is even more mysterious. I can tell you it's based on a fairy tale, but it's set in modern times with a very skeptical main character who is not going to enjoy getting caught up in the mess the fairy tale left behind. Plotting is in progress.

So if you wonder what I'm doing, know that it's either writing, editing, or playing online games to get rid of the clutter in my mind.

I'm giving away a copy of "The Speed of Wind" on Goodreads this week; stay tuned for further fun announcements.

"The Speed of Wind" is here!

This is an exciting day for me; my second novel, "The Speed of Wind", is now available on Amazon in Kindle and Paperback format! (Other formats/retailers coming soon...)

This book was one of my biggest challenges, as the Fire Queen has a much larger role than she had in "The Zarder". Where there's the Fire Queen, there's madness, treachery, foul language to edit down to not quite as foul language, and Random Lady Gaga songs for writing music. She's a seriously disturbed villainess, and this novel will answer the question of how she got that way. Unfortunately, she's kidnapped three hostages, including Idenno. It's not exactly a secret that she hates that guy; she smiled for the first time in "The Zarder" when she heard he was miserable.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have Ransenna, who is doing her best to keep Idenno and Deldenno alive. She's also dealing with an awkward crush on Deldenno. Needless to say, the tough environment and time away from their Bonds is going to turn that into something more significant.

In the six years since "The Zarder", Bryn has gained a wife and a Bond. He and his Bond Xoltorble will have to protect said wife by taking her place when the Fire Queen demands a confrontation with the Zarder. Also, there's a ten year old girl tagging along to give him advice on how to find "the dragon" and how to avoid dying from poisonous plants.

Will Bryn and Xoltorble reach the hostages in time to save them, or will the Fire Queen have her revenge? Find out when you read "The Speed of Wind"!

What is it like outside the Sandleyr?

For the Onizards, life outside the Sandleyr is unthinkable. Their greatest punishment is banishment from the Sandleyr, since they believe that they need each other to survive. There are stories of the Onizards who rejected Senbralni being "killed by the human tribes", which raises an interesting question. Where are these humans that are capable of killing an Onizard? Clearly they are a wealthy and bored class of people that are far separated from humans like Jena and Bryn.

In "The Speed of Wind", we finally find out what it is like past the training grounds and into the wilderness. Bryn and his Bond Xoltorble are on a mission to rescue three hostages, and their guide is a ten-year-old girl named Delma who has a very personal score to settle with the "dragon".

Delma is an interesting character; she was part of a group of humans who were never slaves, and she has spent her life in the woods. Culture clash is inevitable, but she keeps an open mind. I had fun writing her.

The wilderness is full of fascinating things like trees with blue flowers and unicorns. Yes, unicorns. Trust me, these unicorns aren't like Amalthea.

The downside is that there are plenty of glades and caves for the former Fire Queen to hide from the rain, and she has the head start as well as six years of practice living in the woods. Her scenes were a challenge to write, but the reviewer who commented "I would have liked to find out more about what made her the evil she is now" should be quite pleased.

"The Speed of Wind" will take everyone outside the Sandleyr and force them to face some demons. I hope you all will enjoy the journey.

Spotlight On: Bryn

Name: Bryn
Aliases:  Senme
Race: Human
Age: 17 during the events of "The Zarder"
Sex: Male

Notable Things About Him:
* He has a temper that causes him to act without thinking sometimes. Nothing incited this more than hearing the Fire Queen's gleeful acknowledgment of Jena's "death".

* Bryn is the only other human from Jena's village that is still alive. His intial anger against the Onizards is his way of coping with his grief.

* Underneath that anger and temper is a soft and loving heart.

Notable Quote:

"Fair enough. Pretend you’re protecting her. Just don’t wait until she’s dead before you tell her. You’ll regret it.”
            -Bryn on Delbralfi's reluctance to admit his feelings

Spotlight On: Leyrkan Mekanni

Another early Onizard drawing to laugh at.
Name: Leyrkan Mekanni
Aliases: Leyrkan, Mek, Mad Mekanni (don't use that nickname, please)
Race: Onizard (Child of Light)
Age: Roughly 20
Sex: Male

Notable Things About Him:
* Mekanni is the ruler of the Night Kingdom, a position that once held great respect. Now it means simply watching over the Onizards while they are sleeping.

* A traumatic fight in his past has left Mekanni with two mangled legs and a "sickness" that occasionally makes him forget where he is and see past events instead of present events. Think of an empath suffering from untreated PSTD and you'll begin to understand why this sickness is so dangerous and difficult to control. Mekanni's sickness has brought him the cruel nickname "Mad Mekanni".

* He acts tough as a teacher to hide his fears of what could happen to Jena and Senraeno if they are caught. His gruff exterior hides a gentle heart.

Notable Quote:
Do you have any idea whatsoever of what you’re up against? The Fire Queen will not fight fair, and she will watch you for your weaknesses. She will delight in finding out what makes you scream in terror, and once she finds out, you had better pray to the Lord of the Sky that she kills you quickly. But she will not kill you quickly.

Eclectic Reader Challenge 2012: Thriller/Suspense

I saw "Crack-Up" by Eric Christopherson mentioned in the Amazon forums, and thought it looked interesting. I'm glad I picked up a copy, as it was a very entertaining read.

The main character, Argus Ward, is a "high-functioning paranoid schizophrenic" with a seemingly good life. He has a wife, children, and a high-paying job as a security consultant. All of that goes downhill when his medication fails and he kills one of his high-profile clients. But was it a case of medication failing, or something more sinister at work?

The suspense in "Crack-Up" works well because we're never entirely sure what events are real and what is only the delusions of Argus' schizophrenia. It's possible that Argus was the pawn of a major conspiracy to murder his client, John Helms, or it's possible the conspiracy is only as real as the voice of Darth Vader talking from the air vent. Christopherson's writing keeps you guessing until the end as you try to figure out the truth from an unreliable narrator.

There is some nudity in this story, as well as cursing and tense situations. I would recommend "Crack-Up" for ages 16 and older.

The Speed of Wind cover!

It's not coming out until March, but I had to share this cover:

Six years after the events of "The Zarder", Zarder Bryn and his Bond Xoltorble (a.k.a. Xolt) must save three important hostages with the help of a ten-year-old girl who is fresh from the wilderness outside of the Sandleyr. Much more is at stake than even they can guess...

Spotlight On: Alair

Considering my most recent review, there's only one character that could feature in the next spotlight.

Look at me, abusing the Photoshop effects
Name: Alair
Aliases: Silly Kitten
Race: Onizac (think of a psychic cat with a spike on the end of its tail)
Age: 6
Sex: Male

Notable Things About Him:
* Alair "had all the usual quirks of the barn cats she had grown up with as well as the ability to scream in her head for food." If that doesn't sound scary, you haven't met many cats.

* Alair randomly changes grammar, depending on his mood. Do not let this fool you; he is smarter than even Jena, his Bond, knows.

* Most think he belongs to Delbralfi; he encourages this mistake to protect Jena from the Fire Queen's wrath. If a human's mind is strong enough to tolerate an Onizac, they aren't as dumb as the Fire Queen says they are.

* Since he went into hiding and slept for most of the novel, Alair is probably my smartest character. Either that or the laziest.

Notable Quote:

How did the nature lady know I’m Jena’s Bond? Jena’s not dead. Is Jena in trouble?

Eclectic Reader Challenge 2012: Non-Fiction

I picked up a copy of Six Cats in My Kitchen by Lyn Horner when I mentioned the Eclectic Reader Challenge in Amazon's Meet our Authors forum (on a side note, it's amazing how many people will respond when you mention possibly getting featured on someone's blog as a review). It is a non-fiction story about, you guessed it, six cats that at one time lived together in the author's house. The idea of six cats living together seems like mass chaos even to this cat loving reader, but the book, thankfully, managed to make sense out of the situation and give each cat a chance to shine.

Like all good animal stories do, this cat tale brought out anecdotes about their human housemates as well. I learned a little about life, death, and the Horner's struggles with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease. The story read like a story that someone would tell at the kitchen table, complete with asides about interesting things that were happening at the same time.

I was alarmed, however, when I read about Horner letting her declawed cats outside because "they need their taste of freedom". Without going into too much of a rant, I must note that there's a reason why most shelters won't let you adopt cats you plan on letting outside; it's extremely dangerous for the cat. Horner advises in the end, "Please be wise; don't do as I do."

Overall, if you're looking for an honest memoir with some cats that shared the author's life over the years, you should take a look at Six Cats in My Kitchen.

Spotlight On: Idenno

Behold, one of my earliest Onizard drawings. Mock at your leisure.

Name: Idenno
Aliases: Watchzard, Iden
Race: Onizard (Child of Water)
Age:  Roughly 20, which makes him middle-aged in Onizard years
Sex: Male

Notable Things About Him:
* Twin brother of Mekanni and the son of Senmani, Idenno is technically a Lord of the Night Kingdom. He hasn't considered himself a part of that kingdom for quite some time. He's too busy looking out for Rulsaesan as the Watchzard of the Day Kingdom.

* His feelings for Rulsaesan are the worst kept secret in the Sandleyr. He will never act on them, as Rulsaesan's mate Deyraeno is one of his best friends.

* Idenno was one of the first Onizards that I ever drew. He also has his own theme song, which can be heard here.

Notable Quote:
I made a promise to Rulsaesan long ago, and I intend to keep it. As long as I’m still breathing, the Fire Queen will not harm your family.

What's in a Name? Or, Find Your Onizard Name!

Someone once asked me where I got the names for my characters, as they were confused by the structure of Onizard names. While some of the names can be daunting when written out (Deybralfi's name sounds as harsh as she is), their naming structure follows a very simple system.

There are two syllables in the first part of an Onizard's name. Usually, one syllable is chosen by the mother, and the other syllable is chosen by the father. Though to humans they may seem like random letters that sound cool when placed together, these syllables are actually words in the old language of Senbralni's time.

The arrangement of these words can give a different meaning to a name. For the best example, there was once a Leyrkan named Mesenni. The first syllable, me, means "hope". The second syllable, sen, is a very common naming word which now means "star" (no one really knows what it meant during Senbralni's time, when stars didn't exist). Placed together, the name Mesen means "hope star", as in the star others are placing their hope in. Senme, on the other hand, means "star hope", as in someone placing hope in the stars.

Stars are precious to Onizards, as are children. Is it any wonder, then, that Del, which is the Onizard equivalent of "Jr.", is one of the other more common naming words? Delbralfi, Deldenno, Delculble and Delsenni are just some of the Onizards with this name! Senraeno originally wanted to join the "Del" party, but a great friend wisely pointed out that Senraeno would sound better than Delraeno.  Del is the only naming word that must come first in an Onizard's name. It is a sign of respect for the friend or ancestor the child is named after.

Onizard parents have to be cautious when giving their children names, as the last part of the child's name is out of their control. This last syllable identifies what element the Onizard is.

no = Child of Water
na = Child of Earth
ble = Child of Wind
fi = Child of Fire
san = Child of Light (Day)
ni = Child of Light (Night Kingdom)

While both of Teltrena's parents were Children of Earth, there was no guarantee that she would be one as well. Luckily, she did not end up being called Teltrefi for the rest of her life. Delbralfi's name if he were a Child of Earth is only slightly better.

In summary, two syllables of name followed by one syllable of an Onizard's element equals one proper Onizard name.

Now, to give you a bit of fun, here are some Onizard naming words and their meanings. Figure out who you would be, and post in the comments! In the unlikely event that you happen to pick the same name as a character in one of my future novels, I'll laugh at the coincidence and e-mail you a short, major spoiler-free description of said character to see how closely you match. Onizards can repeat names in later generations, so don't feel too bad about it. You might find out something no one other than myself knows about the next novels! If your name is truly unique and it inspires me, you may find yourself in possession of an original hand-drawn Onizard. In other words, please leave your e-mail in the comments.

Note that some of these names clearly came from the time when the Onizards were separate clans, while others are later editions. Also note that the Onizards chose interesting things to divide along gender lines.

Am(female)/Em(male) = beloved
Blom = of the lost
Bral = long-lasting fire
Brul = a quick fire
Cul = thunder
Del = the younger ("Jr.")
Den (male) / Dan (female) = one who loves
Dey = great in power
Er = two (in this case, usually given to one of a pair of twins)
Fas = son
Fal = daughter
Gra = healer
Hur = storm
I = proud
Kan (male) / Que (female) = heart
Ma (female) / Me (male) = hope
Rae = renewing wave
Ran = unlooked for (mostly given to "WHOOPS!" babies. :P)
Rul = bright
Sae = one who sees
Sai = eyes
Sen = star
Stai = legs
Tai = wings
Tel = steadfast
Tor = gust of wind
Tre =  tree (the Onizards worked hard on this one. It's pronounced "treh" and it has one less letter e!)
Xol = lightning

Let the fun begin!
